In this lab, we were asked to create a piece of music with JES, and to do this, we used MIDI numbers, and our JES programming skills, to compose a sound, I'll get to that at the end, but first...Wednesday in class, we used JES to shift the frequency of a sound by a given factor, and also created an echo effect. Here is a man saying "Rabbit".When
we shift the frequency of a sound, it can have two possible effects, it
could get slower, if we shift the frequency by a factor of less than 1,
or, if we shift it by a factor of greater than 1, we can make the sound
faster. Here's the original sound again. Here's the sound with a frequency shifted by a factor of 0.7.Here's the sound with a frequency shifted by a factor of 1.7.See how it got slower/faster?Another effect we created was an echo effect, which we could modify to come earlier or later in the sound. Here's the original sound. Here's the sound with 1 echo. Here's the sound with 2 echos. Finally,
we get to the fun stuff. We created our own little musical songs,
and the result comes from different frequencies, creating a
piano-like (or if we use square notes, a sci-fi-like) noise. I like
movies a lot, so I made two songs. The
first song is a sequence of versions of the
5-note song from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".
The
second song is the theme to the
"Star Wars" trilogy.
(I modified this one, so the user could pick how many times the user looped through the song. I chose to loop it 3 times.)
And, there you have it.Return to John's course page
