Four football players earn All-MIAA honors
Four Kalamazoo College football players received All-MIAA honors as announced on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Jimmy Semelsberger and Brandon Foutz were named to the All-MIAA First Team. Brandon Luczak and Jared Andrzejewski were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Jimmy Semelsberger, a senior wide receiver from Bloomfield Hills (Lahser HS), earned All-MIAA First Team honors for the second consecutive year. He set Kalamazoo College single-season and career records for receptions and receiving yards. He also tied a school record with 15 catches in a game. He finished the year with 96 catches for 1,116 yards and 10 touchdowns while leading the MIAA in receptions per game and receiving yards per game. Brandon Foutz, a senior linebacker from Grand Blanc (Grand Blanc HS), led the Hornets with 99 total tackles, including 8.5 for lost yardage with two sacks and an interception. Foutz ranked second in the MIAA with 10.7 tackles per league game.

Jared Andrzejewski, a senior offensive lineman from Saint Johns (Saint Johns HS), earned All-MIAA Second Team honors for the second consecutive year. Brandon Luczak, a senior quarterback from Rochester Hills (Rochester HS), led the MIAA in passing and total offense. He threw for 3,663 yards with 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions and had 3,818 yards of total offense. Luczak set five single-game school records, five single-season school records, and two career records. He also set MIAA records for pass attempts and completions in a game. Kalamazoo finished the 2009 season with a record of 4-6 (1-5 MIAA).

Brandon Luczak named MIAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Brandon Luczak, a senior from Rochester Hills (Rochester HS), was selected as the MIAA Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Luczak set MIAA single-game records for passing completions and attempts, completing 56-of-79 passes for 507 yards and five touchdowns in the Hornets’ 45-33 loss to Hope.  Luczak broke the previous MIAA single-game completion mark of 43, set first by Alma’s Bill Nietzke against Hope in 1996 and matched last year by Alma’s Mackenzie McGrady against Albion, and his 79 attempts broke the previous record of 74, also set by Nietzke in 1996 against Hope. He is being honored for the second time this season and in his career.

Men's Basketball falls to Defiance in season opener
The men's basketball team lost 79-62 to Defiance College in the season opener on Sunday, Nov. 15. The Hornets led by six (22-16) midway through the first half, but Defiance used a 10-4 run to pull ahead 26-25 with 7:50 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets led the rest of the game, including 41-35 at halftime. Defiance shot 42.6 percent overall and made 11-of-28 three-pointers. Kalamazoo shot 34.7 percent overall and made just 5-of-23 three-pointers. Defiance held a 45-40 advantage in rebounds. Ryan Clark led four Hornets in double figures with 15 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Stewart scored 14 points with four rebounds and six assists. A.J. Williams scored 11 points with six rebounds and four assists. Joe Prepolec scored 10 points with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Drew Mitchell added eight points with four blocked shots. Swim teams remain undefeated with wins at Olivet
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams remained perfect with wins at Olivet on Saturday, Nov. 14. The men's team defeated Olivet 172-106 while the women's team won 185.5-97.5. Winning results for the men were: 400 Medley Relay (Ellis, Espinosa, Mueller, Fleming), Kenny Heidel (1000 freestyle), Brian Bazzell (200 freestyle, 50 freestyle), Alfonso Espinosa (100 breaststroke), Colin Mervak (1M, 3M), Steve Brower (200 backstroke), Chris Manning (200 breaststroke, 200 IM), 200 Free Relay (Bazzell, Ellis, Smith, Fleming). Winning for the women were: 400 Medley Relay (Weeks, Edsall, Knoechel, Grue), Katy Knoechel (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Kaitlin Weeks (100 backstroke), Katie Grue (200 butterfly, 200 backstroke), Taryn Edsall (50 freestyle), Christine Lewis (100 freestyle), Kate Chamberlain (200 breaststroke), Erin Campbell (3M), Kelly Bresnahan (200 IM), and the 200 Free Relay (Edsall, Knoechel, Weeks, Baumann). Football Hornets set records in season-ending loss
The football team suffered a 45-33 loss at Hope on Saturday, Nov. 14. The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 31-0 lead and led 31-7 at halftime. Hope led 45-14 early in the fourth quarter, but the Hornets fought back and scored three touchdowns before time expired resulting in the 45-33 defeat. Brandon Luczak set school single-game records with 507 passing yards, 498 yards of total offense, 56 completions and 79 pass attempts. He tied a school record with five touchdown passes. Jimmy Semelsberger tied the school record with 15 catches (142 yards, 2 touchdowns) and set a new single-season record with 1,116 receiving yards. Jillian McLaughlin finishes seventh at NCAA III Regional
Jillian McLaughlin finished seventh at the NCAA III Great Lakes Cross Country Regional on Saturday, Nov. 14. With a time of 22:21, McLaughlin automatically qualifies for the NCAA III Championships Nov. 21 at Baldwin-Wallace College. As a team, Kalamazoo finished 22nd out of the 34 teams in the regional event. The men's cross country team finished 27th out of 36 teams. Craig Marlatt came in 130th at 28:14. Kalamazoo College creates full-time Women's Soccer coaching position
Kalamazoo College is creating a new position for a full-time women’s soccer coach and member of the physical education department. A national search will begin immediately.

“We are excited about the opportunity to move the women’s soccer program and the entire athletics department forward by making this a full-time position,” said Kalamazoo College Provost Mickey McDonald. “In addition to the coaching that takes place on the field, intercollegiate coaches must be able to recruit successfully and mentor their student-athletes off the field. The process of moving our head coaches to full-time status will better allow the College to meet the needs of the respective teams as well as the entire department and College community.”

The Kalamazoo College women’s soccer team finished 8-6-5 overall in 2009. The Hornets tied for third place in the MIAA with a record of 5-2-1 and advanced to the MIAA Tournament Championship game.

Women’s Soccer at Kalamazoo College began in 1982. The program has an overall record of 326-146-36 for a .677 winning percentage. The Hornets are 165-60-12 (.722) in MIAA play since the league began sponsoring women’s soccer in 1989. Kalamazoo has won eight MIAA championships, made six NCAA III Tournament appearances, and produced 10 NCAA III All-Americans.

Four Women's Soccer players earn All-MIAA honors
Maya Smolcic, Anja Burk, C.J. McCarthy and Jackie Short received All-MIAA honors on Thursday, Nov. 12. Smolcic, a freshman from Troy (Troy HS), was named to the All-MIAA First Team. In conference play the midfielder recorded two goals and three assists. Burk, McCarthy and Short all earned All-MIAA Second Team honors. Burk, a senior defender from Saline (Saline HS), was one of the Hornets' top defenders throughout the year, playing every minute of the conference tournament in which the Kalamazoo defense posted three consecutive shutouts. She was also named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for week seven of league play. McCarthy, a freshman from Ada (Forest Hills Eastern), was one of the team’s top offensive performers. The forward was Kalamazoo's second-leading scorer posting seven goals and two assists for 16 total points. In league play McCarthy was fifth in total points (9) and fourth in the league in goals (4). She was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for week 10 of league play. Short, the Hornets' leading scorer and a freshman from Troy (Athens HS), was recognized with second team honors for being the league’s second-leading scorer with five goals and third in total points (10). The 2009 Kalamazoo College women’s soccer team finished in a tie for third place during the MIAA regular season (5-2-1), and fell to Albion in a shootout in the conference tournament final. The Hornets posted a final overall record of 8-6-5.

Men's Soccer players earn All-MIAA honors
Kalamazoo College men's soccer players Dane Carey and Ben Darling received All-MIAA honors on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Carey, a junior from Roscommon (Roscommon HS), earned All-MIAA First Team honors. Carey led the MIAA in goals (8), points (19) and game-winning goals (4). He had three assists in league games and was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for week eight. Darling, a junior from Suttons Bay (Suttons Bay HS), earned All-MIAA Second Team honors. As one of the league's top defensive players, Darling anchored a defense that allowed 12 goals in 14 league contests. Darling also had an assist and scored one goal this season. In addition to his all-league honors, Darling was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for week seven.

C.J. McCarthy named MIAA Women's Soccer Player of the Week
C.J. McCarthy, a freshman from Ada (Forest Hills Eastern HS), was selected as the MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. McCarthy was a dangerous attacker for the Hornets with four shots on goal in their MIAA tournament championship game against Albion. She had a near-goal late in regulation that was cleared away by an Albion defender at the last minute. McCarthy is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Nyemade Cooper records double-double in exhibition game at Western Michigan University
Nymade Cooper scored 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Hornets 94-50 exhibition loss at NCAA Division I Western Michigan University on Sunday, Nov. 8. After a slow start, Kalamazoo played a solid second half as the Hornets were outscored just 44-33 after halftime. In addition to Cooper's double-double, Courtney Kaplan scored 12 points with three assists. Carly Zeitlin scored eight points with five rebounds. Western shot 49.4 percent on their home floor and outrebounded Kalamazoo, 51-32. Kalamazoo begins the regular season Nov. 21 at Hanover College. Box Score

Men's Basketball battles Western Michigan University in preseason exhibition game
The men’s basketball team battled NCAA Division I neighbor Western Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 7, stumbling late and losing 78-52. The Hornets scored the first basket of the game on a jumper by sophomore Joe Prepolec, and found themselves trailing at halftime by only eight points. The second half went back-and-forth as the Hornets cut the lead to five points on a couple of occasions. Kalamazoo trailed by ten, 61-51, with just over six minutes to play before WMU pulled away for the 26-point victory.  Ryan Clark led the Hornets with 19 points and seven rebounds. Prepolec was the only other Hornet in double-figures with ten, while AJ Williams and Tyler Stewart chipped in with seven points each. The Hornets return to action this Sunday with their home opener against Defiance College at 3 p.m. Box Score

Colleen Leonard selected to All-MIAA Second Team
Colleen Leonard, a sophomore from Mason, was selected to the 2009 All-MIAA Volleyball Second Team. Leonard led the Hornets with 161 kills in conference matches and ranked ninth in the MIAA with 2.73 kills per game. She was second on the team in league matches with 42 blocks and 14 service aces.

Men's and Women's Swimming/Diving teams defeat Albion
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Albion at home on Saturday, Nov. 7. The men's team won 166.5-114.5 while the women's team won 160-135. Winning events for the women's team were: 200 Medley Relay (Weeks, Chamberlain, Knoechel, Edsall), Katie Grue (200 freestyle), Kaitlin Weeks (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke), Taryn Edsall (100 breaststroke), Katy Knoechel (200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 IM), Loren Weber (100 butterfly), and the 400 Freestyle Relay (Edsall, Chamberlain, Baumann, Grue). Winning events for the men were: 200 Medley Relay (Armstrong, Espinosa, Mueller, Smith), Kenny Heidel (1000 freestyle), Chris Manning (200 freestyle, 200 IM), Steve Brower (100 backstroke, 200 backstroke), Alfonso Espinosa (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke), David Scasny (200 butterfly), Paul Ellis (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Nick Smith (100 freestyle), Jay Daniels (500 freestyle), and the 400 Freestyle Relay (Hennigar, Janes, benmark, Fleming). Kalamazoo's next meet is Saturday, Nov. 14 at Olivet. Results

Football defeated in final home game of season
The football team fell 34-14 to Albion in the final home game of the season. The Britons went up 14-0 in the first five minutes and led 24-0 at halftime. The Hornets put up just 297 yards of total offense while allowing 485 total yards. Brandon Luczak was 23-of-49 passing for 229 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Jimmy Semelsberger had eight catches for 71 yards. Semelsberger and Cory McCain each had touchdown receptions. Jake Schell led the defense with 11 total tackles. Men's Soccer suffers 1-0 loss to Trine
The men's soccer team lost 1-0 to Trine on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the final game of the 2009 season. Trine scored nine minutes into the contest. Kalamazoo had a 11-5 advantage in shots, but each team had just two shots on goal. Kalamazoo finishes the 2009 season with an overall record of 7-9-2 and 7-6-1 in the MIAA. Box Score

Women's Soccer falls to Albion in shootout at MIAA Tournament Championship
The women's soccer team played Albion to a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, but Albion captured the MIAA Tournament Championship by defeating Kalamazoo 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday, Nov. 7. Kalamazoo and Albion each made their first three shots in the shootout. Both teams missed their fourth shot and made their fifth. Kalamazoo missed its sixth attempt and Albion scored to take home the tournament victory. Each team had 13 shots during regulation and overtime. Kalamazoo had an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Four football players earn Academic All-District honors
Four members of the Kalamazoo College football team were awarded ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors on Thursday, Nov. 5. Brandon Luczak and Nate Kopydlowski were selected to the first team while Jimmy Semelsberger and Jared Andrzejewski were selected to the second team. As first-team selections, Luczak and Kopydlowski are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Luczak, a senior quarterback from Rochester Hills, carries a 3.85 GPA as a chemistry major. He currently leads the nation (NCAA III) in passing yards (2,927) and is second in completions per game, passing yards per game and total offense per game. He set a Kalamazoo College record with 30 touchdown passes this season. Kopydlowski, a senior linebacker from Goodrich, carries a 3.96 GPA as a biology major. He is currently second on the team with 65 tackles this season.

Semelsberger, a senior wide receiver from Bloomfield Hills, carries a 3.58 GPA as an economics and business major. Semelsberger set school records for career receptions (241) and career receiving yards(2,783), and is currently ranked eighth in NCAA III in receptions per game. Andrzejewski, a senior offensive lineman from Saint Johns, carries a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in economics and business as well as psychology. Andrzejewski was an All-MIAA second team offensive lineman last season.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America/All-District program is coordinated and voted upon by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). To be nominated, a player must be a starter or significant reserve with a minimum 3.3 GPA.

Men's Soccer wins 2-1 at Albion
The men's soccer team won 2-1 at Albion on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Dagan Hammar scored in the sixth minute (Phil Jackson assist). Ben Darling made it 2-0 with a goal in the 29th minute (Dane Carey assist). Albion scored its only goal in the 71st minute. Ben Schroeder made one save in goal for the Hornets. Dane Macdonell made two saves. With the win, Kalamazoo improved to 7-8-2 overall and 7-5-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets have won four of their last five games and have moved into third place in the MIAA. Volleyball bows out of MIAA Tournament with loss at Alma
The volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss (25-16, 25-23, 12-25, 25-12) in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Kalamazoo entered as the #6 seed while Alma was the #3 seed. Colleen Leonard led the Hornets with 12 kills, a .214 attack percentage and eight block assists. Johanna Kupe added seven kills. Larisa Grinvalds had 28 digs. Box Score

Women's Soccer advances to MIAA Tournament Finals
After playing Calvin to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, Kalamazoo won the shootout 3-1 to advance to Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship. In today's shootout, Paige Howell scored on the Hornets' first attempt. Calvin scored immediately following to tie. Jackie Short scored on Kalamazoo's third attempt, and Julia Schroeder clinched it with a goal in the Hornets' fifth attempt. Courtney McCoy made saves on two of Calvin's four attempts. McCoy made six saves during regulation and overtime. Calvin was the #1 seed in the tournament after finishing 7-1 in the regular season. Kalamazoo entered the tournament as the #4 seed with a 5-2-1 league record. Saturday's MIAA Tournament Championship is scheduled for noon in Kalamazoo. The Hornets will host the #6 seed Albion College, a 1-0 overtime winner over #2 Adrian this afternoon. Kalamazoo and Albion played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season. Box Score

Anja Burk and Ben Schroeder earn Academic All-District soccer honors
Kalamazoo College soccer players Anja Burk and Ben Schroeder were selected to receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the 2009 season. Burk, a senior defender from Saline (Saline HS), was selected to the Academic All-District IV Second Team. A biology major with a 3.94 GPA, Burk is a key starter on a defense that has a 1.46 goals against average. She was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for week seven this season. Schroeder, a senior goalkeeper from Livonia (Stevenson HS), was selected to the Academic All-District IV Second Team. An economics major with a 3.66 GPA, Schroeder has a 0.75 goals against average with five shutouts in 13 starts. Men's Cross Country sixth, Women seventh at MIAA Championships
Jillian McLaughlin earns All-MIAA honors
The men's cross country team took sixth place while the women's team finished seventh at the MIAA Championships on Saturday, Oct. 31. The women's team had 162 points and was just six points out of sixth place and eight points out of fifth place. The men's team had 164 points. Jillian McLaughlin finished seventh overall with a time of 23:32 and earned All-MIAA First Team honors for the third time in her career. Ellen Conner finished 48th and Katy Sly finished 49th. Stefan Dylewski led the men's team with a 33rd place fininsh (28:29). Caleb Kline fininshed 42nd and Benjamin Cooper came in 48th. Men's Results - Women's Results
