Green Hornet Invitational Sustainability Highlights
The Green Hornet Invitational will reflect the sustainable practices at Kalamazoo College which have been reinforced with the signing of the President’s Climate Commitment in 2007: http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/
And will reflect the values in the following ways throughout the tournament:
- No paper programs will be available; rosters and brackets will be on posters in the lobby. Online programs will be available for those who wish to print one off.
- We will not sell plastic water bottles nor allow them in the gym. Participants will all receive a metal water bottle and tap water will be available throughout the gym during the tournament for participants and fans alike. Fans are asked to bring a water bottle, or they may purchase one in the lobby. The Hornets will be practicing a tap water initiative during the entire season.
- Our concessions will benefit a local charity.
- Kalamazoo College sustainability interns will be present to answer questions and educate where appropriate.
- Saturday morning will feature a tournament breakfast at the College foodservice where participants will hear from the artist who designed and built the trophies and the college sustainability interns.
- Tournament trophies will be made out of recycled materials by Alexandra Leonard K’09. (See Artist Statement Below)
- There will be incentives for restaurants within walking distance for any tournament attendee who walks to get a meal.

Green Hornet Invitational Trophy Artist Statement
Alexandra Leonard, artist
Volleyball Trophy, 2011
PVC pipe, cardboard, newspaper, piano parts, wire, paint chips
These trophies are handcrafted from reused materials, all with a history behind them. The best story is of the nearly 100-year-old piano hammers the volleyball figures are made from, a relic from my days at Kalamazoo College a few years ago. When moving out after graduation, the broken-beyond-repair piano in my living room had to be removed, so it was dismantled and a few of the parts saved. A small piece of paper found inside the piano revealed that it was a military piano built before the 1920s in Detroit. The memories this piano has witnessed, mostly unknown, live within the various components of these trophies and carry a spirit of that past within them. While normally parts and pieces like this are discarded all the time, they are not useless and exhibit the craftsmanship of someone in the past. So reinvented, they continue in another form, as new memories here are created.
