A little history of the choir and their directors --
Founded in 1987, the Kalamazoo College Handbell Choir was first directed by
Judith Dodge Breneman, who was also director of the College Singers and the Bach
Festival Choir. Ms. Breneman left the college in 1989, and Russell Cooper,
a 1989 graduate of Kalamazoo College, took over as director. The choir was
renamed K-Handbells of Kalamazoo College.
In his tenth year as director, Mr. Cooper has been an active participant in
numerous
handbell workshops/festivals/seminars led by noted handbell composers/directors
Donald Allured, Douglas Benton, Kay Cook, David Davidson, William Griffin,
Barbara Kane, Michael Keller, Janet Van Valey,
Douglas Wagner, and Tim Waugh. Mr. Cooper has been a guest clinician in
workshops/festivals throughout Michigan and Indiana.
He is a member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers -
AGEHR.
Kalamazoo College is on the
quarter system, and the handbell choir changes its roster three times per
year. The students rehearse up to six hours every week - 3
rehearsals/week - on a completely volunteer basis, and are an independent
organization separate from the
music department. They perform several times a year, including their own
concerts, and
for local church services and community events.
