Kalamazoo College is a leading institution in integrating academic rigor with life-changing experiential education in a values-driven community.

Kalamazoo College prepares its graduates to better understand, live successfully within, and provide enlightened leadership to a richly diverse and increasingly complex world.

Kalamazoo College values academic rigor and all components of a liberal arts education embodied in our K-Plan; inclusion and equity; residential experiences for students that contribute to their growth as leaders; sustainability; and mission-driven creativity and innovation.

About the Strategic Plan

Herbert Lee Stetson, seventh president of Kalamazoo College, once said that it had always been his desire to make K as good an institution as possible, “always maintaining high ideals, emphasizing quality rather than quantity, developing marked individuality and independence of thought among its students, and creating that spirit which transforms this world into the best possible world for human beings to become all they are capable of becoming.”

Through the years, K has continued to grow and modernize, offering opportunities through the K-Plan and co-curricular activities that may well have exceeded the wildest dreams of its early leaders. These opportunities are now available to the most diverse student body in its history, as the College works toward greater equity and inclusion, not just in enrollment but in its policies and practices.

As we developed the College’s strategic plan, Advancing Kalamazoo College 2029, we aimed to build on the success of the previous plan while addressing new post-pandemic challenges. At the center of our plan are two pillars most central to the College’s mission: Learning for Life and Fostering an Inclusive and Supportive Campus for All. The achievement of these pillars relies upon the strength of the supporting pillars, Financial Sustainability and Enrollment Sustainability. The plan, thoughtfully crafted by constituents across the College, reflects our unwavering commitment to make Kalamazoo College a leading liberal arts institution—one that provides life-changing experiences and inspires lifelong learning, today and for generations to come.

Learning for Life
  • Remove barriers to student participation in programs related to professional readiness and engagement with communities beyond K.
  • Embed career and professional readiness into culture, co-curriculum and curriculum. (Prepare students effectively for professional life after K.)
  • Enhance and develop programs to connect alumni to learning opportunities over their lifespan.
  • Prepare students to engage with local, national and global communities throughout their lives.
Foster an Inclusive and Supportive Campus for All
  • Create vision and transparent structure(s) for coordinating DEIA work occurring across campus.
  • Understand and address impacts of non-inclusiveness in programs, spaces, processes and interactions.
  • Invest in people to further develop talents and skills to support attaining professional goals and continued learning.
  • Build capacity across campus and with Kalamazoo partners for DEIA work.
Financial Sustainability
  • Explore, assess and implement ways to grow existing and develop new revenue sources.
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of campus residential, co-curricular and instructional spaces.
  • Explore, assess and implement strategies to fund capital improvements.
  • Explore, assess and implement cost saving measures in line with strategic goals and expense management best practices.
Enrollment Sustainability
  • Invest in initiatives and relationships to catalyze enrollment growth (alumni, campus partners, off-campus partners).
  • Expand transfer and international enrollments.
  • Support students in achieving curricular and co-curricular excellence.
  • Expand visibility of K’s impact and value throughout enrollment funnel to prospects in primary and secondary markets.
