At K, we nurture both our students’ minds and bodies. Regular physical fitness has a proven effect in improving students’ learning and overall happiness, and the College encourages our entire campus community to take advantage of the many wellness opportunities available to them.
Facilities on Campus
Fitness and Wellness Center
Built in 2016, the College’s Fitness and Wellness Center is the primary gym on campus. The center is equipped with cardio and strength training machines, racquetball courts and multipurpose spaces.
Natatorium
The Kalamazoo College Natatorium, constructed in 2021, is available to all members of the College community during open swim hours.
Anderson Athletic Center
The Anderson Athletic Center is home to the College’s basketball and indoor volleyball court, as well as a weight room for varsity athletic teams.
Physical Education Requirements
The College requires all students to complete at least one unit of physical education (PE) to graduate. These classes are designed to improve the health and wellness of participants while being accessible to all students, regardless of their current activity levels.
Each class is typically 0.2 units and revolves around developing personal fitness, health or life skills. Past PE courses have included yoga, ballet, rock climbing, scuba, first aid, backpacking, gardening and participating in a varsity sport.
Intramural Sports
Students who are looking for the camaraderie and fun that comes with playing team sports, but do not want to participate in varsity athletics, are welcome to join an intramural league. K’s co-ed volleyball, soccer and basketball leagues are meant to be a safe, welcoming and fun environment for all students to play.
Varsity Athletics
The Department of Athletics challenges our students to follow their BEST principles to be champions in the classroom, in competition, and in life.
